East of Ho Chi Minh is the closest beach towns. The three area of Vung Tau, Long Hai, and Ho Tram are quite different and there is something for everyone. Vung Tau is by far the largest and a small peninsular city with beaches on both the ocean and protected side. It has many hotels and restaurants, activities for families, and a large expat community. Long Hai is a locals beach and somewhat gritty fishing center, and Ho Tram is an upscale quieter beach area.
Just north of Vung Tau, before Ho Tram is Long Hai. A beach destination and fishing village mainly for Vietnamese tourists. As you approach from Vung Tau you will first get to the village area. Here you have a fishing community with a lively market, a beach (very dirty) and a few fishing and boating supply stores.
After the village area you come to a much nicer beach that has a number of restaurants serving Hai San (seafood). You will also find fisherman on the beach or in the parking lots selling fresh fish, clams, snails, shrimp, and lobster. You can purchase seafood from these merchants and bring to the restaurants to cook.
